Whether you try to deny it or not, no one can say that they hated the eighties. Flashy colors, big hair, music videos and cheesy music ruled the world for better or for worse. Music went through huge changes, extending and experimenting with new ideas and methods.
One of these emergences was the new wave movement, which melded together both electronic and experimental music. Talking Heads' Remain in Light is an album of funky rhythms, afro beats and irresistible vocals. From song to song, the bass never fails to be funky and as fresh as can be. Talking Heads never seem to fail to incorporate the most original and unexpected percussion techniques and sounds. They used looping and sampling extensively, which was a new technique at the time.
Running at only 40 minutes, Remain in Light is not a long album. The first three songs are much more rhythmic and strutured than those following Once in a Lifetime. The second half of the album is more experimental, with song structure remaining less strict than its predecessors and having the rhythm taking less focus of the song.
These eight songs are sure to whiz by you faster than the cheetahs in Africa, the place that inspired this album. Remain in Light is an excellent album sure to remain a favorite for a long time to come, if it is not already.
