Here's a chance to say that you own a record by an Oregon-based Chinatown dance band, and to do something good for the community. "Slants! Slants! Revolution!" is a record of remixes of the band's 2008 debut "Slanted Eyes, Slanted Hearts," and all the proceeds from the sale will go to fund cancer prevention research for Asian women.
Musically the band was made for live performance, as their sound is a sweaty mix of funk guitar, vamping keyboards and anthemic vocals. If it wasn't going to be taken as an insult, I'd say they are the new KC & The Sunshine Band. The heat generated by the likes of "Love Within My Sins," "We Will Never Die," "Welcome to Doomtown" and others can only be magnified by an audience and alcohol. "Capture Me Burning" is probably the signature track here,
The Slants next record is supposed to be more rock oriented, but this band is so saturated with the funk that it will certainly be another hottie. "Slants! Slants! Revolution!" should not be a replacement for their debut, but a companion to it. Their daunting touring schedule has given them some serious soulful chops, and this extended peek into the workings of their jams is a must-have.
