Providence keeps on giving. My hometown has produced yet another metal/noise concoction that makes the Beefheart in all of us tingle. Formed by members of Lightning Bolt, Royal Crowns and Laurels, Megasus also has the added cultural cache of having many of those members be employees of Harmonix, who are responsible for the (choose: liberating/soul-sucking) Guitar Hero and Rock Band yaya.
The sound here is old school metal with skittish noisy-Providence touches. You can never go wrong with that Sabbath- meets-every-band-that-came-after-Sabbath sound, and there is an obvious glee in these songs. They surely must have been a blast to record. Despite the artsy trappings, this is no ironic take on metal, or an attempt to do it better. It is just a balls-out metalfest that celebrates volume and crunch with abandon.
The title track, "Paladin vs. Berserker" and "Iron Mountain" are the best, and the latter is a band name just waiting to be swiped. The smoking "Red Lottery" and the title track also, perversely, made appearances in Guitar Hero 2.
Time will tell if Megasus will last, or will be an occasional side project. Either way, their debut is a heavy does of classic metal poses and power, which immediately put the band right up there as ones to tune into.
