Mark Lanegan pops out his 5th solo album since 1990 and they seem to be coming faster since 1998’s Scraps at Midnight. I guess that’s what happens when your full time band calls it quits. If you were not aware, Lanegan fronted Screaming Trees, one of the sadly overlooked Seattle bands of the early 90’s. He has always had this folky singer/songwriter side to him and Field Songs is one of the stronger of the albums he has released by himself on Sub Pop. His voice is suited for this type of music and Mark seems to put his heart into every note that he sings and writes. If you have been listening to Mark for a while then you won’t notice a terrible difference (except the Screaming Trees inspired “No Easy Action) but you will notice that Lanegan is refining his style into what he knows best. Mike Johnson from Dinosaur Jr. fame has been playing with Mark for quite some time now and is included on Field Songs. Also making a few appearances is Ben Shepherd (Soundgarden) and Duff McKagan (Guns & Roses). Lanegan has the voice of angel and the songwriting of a poet. He is a refined artist that is worthy of a purchase of each of his albums; Field Songs included.
