I don't know that I've ever asked myself, "What does it sound like if a Gustapo records?" . Today, Mason Daring arrived in my downloads. After nearly forty years of involvement composing for films or writing contracts as a music lawyer, it seems Daring has an agility in his voice that wreaks of 50's and 60's Retro Rock, but oddly fits in my player.
Its not all just pasty diner's playing Daring, as he brings a bit more to the table in "Funny" where the sound is rounded and even funky with an almost Setzer cockiness. Having an upbeat Lounge Act sound has a respect, but its songs like "Baby Blues" certainly remind you of other types of material, such as Buddy Holly. Holly fans should definitely check out track nine, "People Are Talking", which mirrors Holly's sound to a tee.
Though I wouldn't go as far to call him Christian, he certainly has his religiously lyrical moments. I'm positive, lighter songs like "Lightship" and the closer "Soldier's Lullaby" are meant to highlight a capability to play a softer side. I'm also positive Daring know his strengths. One of the songs most different from the rest of the album is "Dixie Taps". A bit more twang, and then some finely placed and performed brass.
I imagine they are, but I'm nonetheless curious if these are all originals. I'll look into that. In the end, Daring will stay in my library, for the blue moon occasion. Good production and diversified songwriting.
