Kinski is a primarily instrumental rock outfit from Seattle that likes to play with analog and digital noisescapes and really play with the listener’s sense of balance and aural senses. Airs Above Your Station is Kinski’s debut album for Sub Pop and their follow-up to their critically acclaimed Be Gentle With The Warm Turtle. Their sound is very similar to that of Mogwai and the more experimental side of Sonic Youth. The songs are often lengthy experiments in sound and music with songs as long as 11+ minutes. Kinski has the ability to come of sounding beautiful and then switch up and become aggressive in the same song. Station starts out with a track called “Steve’s Basement� that introduces the listener to what they can expect from the group. There is a hypnotizing sample that seems to go on forever until other instruments kick in to fill in the spaces. It is a very beautiful piece. The track “Waves of Second Guessing� really gets trucking after a few minutes, sounding more like a Fu Manchu song that anything else. This shows just how diverse Kinski is. They are a band that won’t appeal to everyone but Mogwai fans should definitely seek out Airs Above Your Station. There are sounds on here that you have never heard before.
