I think we might have someone trying to steal the Guided By Voices mantra of releasing everything that they ever put to tape. Ben Barnett is Kind of Like Spitting’s Robert Pollard in that he is the common denominator in the band’s being. In the past six years, Ben has put out a mind-boggling number of releases on over 10 labels. Now he has found a home-is it temporary, who knows-on Barsuk and is releasing a higher quality album entitled Bridges Worth Burning. The music that Barnett plays is definitive indie rock: sloppy and yet very intriguing. Although I haven’t heard any of Spitting’s earlier material, Ben sounds really focused and determined on Bridges. The music at times gets very emotional and mellow but when Ben releases it’s a real treat. True indie fans will gain full enjoyment out of Kind of Like Spitting.
