I think the word 'groove' perfectly sums up this otherwise uncategorizable album. It fuses God knows how many genres in pursuit of such a sound - If I had to 'genre' it, I'd say it was something like electro-techno-funk-rock. Ish.

Tracks like the excellent 'Big Beat Going', with vocals from Regina Pearl, rest firmly in the club music domain, but groove it certainly does. Groove Generator have nods to Basement Jaxx, but manage to make it less repetitive and more... well, groovy. Another high point comes with a guest vocal in 'The Future I Surrender', which is a gloriously sexy chillout track. Tara Marion croons RnB style over loungey electronic murmurings, interspersed with a few funky rhythms and some samples thrown in for good measure. My favourite, though, has to be 'Club Freak', which is a superb electronic-and-funky-house romp through melodies and beats, and the next track, 'Phat Ambience' - dangerous-sounding. Mmmm.

By total contrast, the grooves generated on 'Anticipate Me' and 'Electric Energy' are more akin to the later Prodigy - heavy on the guitars and dirty noise. These perhaps would need a little more work on the riffs to keep the interest up, but all the bases are covered here too. It's obvious they have talent and a great ear for a beat, and they are keen to apply that to as much as humanly possible, but a little common sense wouldn't go amiss. Credit where it's due - the album fades from one thing to another rather than dragging the listener by the hair.

The sheer scope of the album amazes me, but it does become a little disjointed when you look back on it. If not for the album title, the clever ordering of tracks and a few other hints here and there, most listeners would be left with "WTF?!" on their lips after the last tones fade out. I admire the concept they're chasing (the hunting of a 'groove' is indeed an honourable thing), and if they can somehow find that last little piece of the puzzle, Groove Generator will skyrocket straight into the epic album stakes.

It's not often you come across an album that provides music to suit every mood. Groove Got Phat is able to do just that: upbeat when you're buzzing, mellow when you're chilling. Always a great vibe. Classic! 10/10

Groove Got Phat features the dynamic electro-funk music of Groove Generator (Gregory J Bennett) producer of music for Mercury Rising films, HBO and MTV show networks.
The latest album release from Soundwrx Music August 2009 is a compilation of Groove Generators finest studio work that takes on a new brand called club music. Every track
is laced with electro-pop, rock and funk. Stunning vocal performances from Regina Pearl (Big Beat Going) and Tara Marion (The Future I Surrender) compliment the musical
sensibility of Grooves excellent production.
