Jive64 - Goto10
Its not much of a secret that Electro/Dance is not my cup of tea. It's not about my lack of dancing skills or interest, the music, though dramatic, its far too repetitive. That's not to say I don't force myself to listen to the genre from time to time in an effort to keep my genre interests sharp. Jive64 (Ray Cohen), is the latest to cross my path, and without sounding like too much of goofball, I enjoyed this sharpening.
One of the reasons I don't enjoy reviewing Electro is because there's only so much you can say about a beat. Then again, it's the layering on the top of the beat that makes a great dance track, and Jive64 seems to do nicely. Often times, as most DJ's utilize, Cohen takes the beat to a climax and suddenly drops it out. Most of the release I received feature sultry singers like Chaka Khan, Elita and Dharma. One track that I could imagine gets club spinning is "Turn It Into Love" which has a plethora of faders, and synching.
Again, not a true fan of the sound, but this Israelite seems to have a tasteful take on spinning and production. He's also done a nice job with choosing vocalists who match his work on Goto10. For those who are into the genre, he sort of transitions between American syth pop and European dance. Check out the song "Music" on his myspace for a mix of what his sound is like.
