Dan Jones is a singer/songwriter from Eugene Oregon who has recently inked a deal with Leisure King, Jerry Garcia’s daughter’s label. One Man Submarine is the result of his most recent ventures into the studios and the outcome if very pleasing. His musical influences range from Roger Miller to Husker Du but he seems to stick in the pop vein for One Man Submarine. There are times when he picks it up and starts rocking out (“One Man Submarine). His voice stands out from others with his nasally presentation. Jones has a higher pitched voice than you would imagine from this big man. His guitar playing is quite impressive as well. There are some songs where Dan gets raw and dirty reminding me of Neil Young (“My Banana). But for the most of this album, he is happy with his low-key vocals and minimal arrangements. He is very humorous in his songwriting. On “Worst Practice Ever Dan sings, “How come it sucked, in a fishing hut, how come it sucked, we froze our nuts. One Man Submarine is a very entertaining listen and if you come across it in your local indie store support this one-man powerhouse. Be sure to check him out if you end up in the Oregon area.
