A 19 year old metal band from Finland. You'd think I would have come across Amorphis. Sure, I've heard the name but never heard one of their albums. Now that I've come in contact with their new album, their 9th overall, Skyforger, I wish I would have made contact with them sooner.
Why? Well, I've gotten to the point where I don't have a lot of patience for an entire album full of Cookie Monster type vocals. Don't get me wrong, I do love appropriate growls but when that's all the vocals you get, it tends to get boring. Amorphis are more along the lines of a melodic death metal band. If you are a fan of Progressive Metal such as Opeth you'll definitely be in for Amorphis. The group is not afraid to show their finest musicianship on almost every track and yes, there are growls where appropriate but for the most part you are getting a very talented vocalist that can growl as well as sing his heart out. Soaring guitars are all over the place but not to the point of being overly dramatic. Skyforger is the band's third album with vocalist Tomi Joutsen.
Skyforger is an album even for those who get scared of "death metal". I would say that this is one of the more accessible albums in the melodic death metal genre I have heard in a while, and for that I have listened to it over and over and will continue to do so.
