Hepcat - Push 'n Shove
Hepcat has somehow been lumped into the ska-core category and I am still trying to figure out where, if it even exists, the "core" fits in. The band is more ska revivalists than anything. They do pure ska and they do a fine job of it. Play this album down in Jamaica and no one would even guess that this band is from California. After their critically acclaimed debut, Right On Time, in 1997 they realized that they would have a hard time surpassing it. They have managed to refine their Caribbean sound and, at times, add an interesting element of soul (see "Prison of Love" featuring Dance Hall Crasher's Karina Denike). There is never a boring moment on Push 'n Shove and only time will tell if it is indeed better then Right On Time. Hepcat aren't out to be inovative; they just want to provide us with some great music.
