I do have to admit something. I can't say that I have listened to Voivod since Angel Rat came out in 1991. The band has evolved quite a bit since then and unfortunately due to Piggy's (Denis D'Amour) death in 2005, the band have decided that Infini will be their final album as well. Most of Piggy's guitar parts had been recorded before he died. The band still features former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted and he does make a huge impact on here.

As I said, the band has come a long way from 1991. The band takes a much more direct rock approach, if not even metal and they shy away from the more technical/progressive sounds from their past. What I hear is a metal band that has evolved. I really enjoyed Snake's vocals on every track but the groove of the band really comes through on songs like "Global Warming". What I found was that the quality of the record was way above average. Even the old guitar parts Piggy recorded are flawless. Listen to some of the ingenuity on "A Room With A V.U." or the crushing "Pyramidome". Just brilliant. If you are looking for metal that is a little different than what's out there then Infini should appease. Even some of their older sound comes out on the straight-forward "Krap Radio".

I have to respect a band that would take the time to finish off a former member's start. Taking guitar tracks from 4 years ago and polishing off a song can't be an easy task, both emotionally and technically. But I do have to say that Voivod have gone out on a high note. Infini marks one of my favorite release save for the infamous Nothingface. I'll have to go back and check in with some of their in-between material now.
