When you're talking about Cannibal Corpse, you're talking about pioneers of a scene that's been kicking out the gore-laden brutality for 20+ years. You're talking about forerunners and innovators of a style and, as such, much respect is assumed in simply mentioning the band. It's amazing that they've managed to stay active and relevant all these years, but not so much when you look at the catalog of work they've put together in that time. Evisceration Plague is their latest macabre creation, and it settles in quite nicely, quite quickly, and shows a band both grizzled with experience and still brimming over with youthful energy.

Opener "Priests of Sodom" is a throwback to CC's heyday, an excellent choice for an introduction to the brutality within. George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher sounds as potent as ever behind the mic, his somewhat higher-pitched growls and bellows hitting the right spot consistently within each song's architecture.  "Scalding Hell" is a quick shot of blazing death metal, with riffs that perculate over pummeling drums into frenzied climax. "To Decompose" is highlighted by some masterful solo work. I personally love the way "Evidence In The Furnace" transistions from full-speed barnburner into a mid-paced crushing stomp, only to let loose with one last intense solo as it closes."Carnivorious Swarm" has to be one of the fastest and most complex numbers here. My own personal highlight is the more tempered and mastered title track, which lets it's riffs develop at a slower pace and shows a knack for the almighty hook that has always been an underrated aspect of Cannibal Corpse's music.

All in all, a finer death metal album for 2009 just can't be asked for. Pioneers that continue upon their destined road, Cannibal Corpse have once again reminded the masses who wrote the book on the style. Evisceration Plague belongs in the collections of every death metal fan far and wide.

I really never bothered with them in the past, which might reflect my impressions on this record. Far from spectacular, but certainly as good as good gets without being great. Some of the riffs from this album still haunt me to this day.

Ever read "World War Z"? Great book, you ought to give it a go. It's an oral history of the Zombie Wars as told by the survivors. You see, I love zombies. They are the ultimate in horror movie villains. I mean, how do you kill something which is already dead? And what happens when the zombie is your girlfriend of your sister or your best mate who the zombies got earlier and zombified? How could you kill your girlfriend, except she's not your girlfriend any more? She's a sort of brain eating, unfeeling, uncaring dead thing who only looks like your girlfriend. All the essence that made her up is gone.

But then I get to thinking. If zombies are dead, that means that their digestive systems cannot process food and the blood doesn't circulate around their bodies. So how does food get processed into carbohydrate energy and circulated around their bodies? Come to that, their lungs don't work so how do they take in oxygen to burn that energy. But then, even if they did, the heart doesn't pump blood around the body so there's no way that these organic components could get to the cells. So, how come zombies move then, without energy, without a metabolism?

And why do they shuffle around and not run? And how do they groan if they don't have vocal chords (organic gas build up escaping through pressure perhaps)? And why the f**k do they eat brains? I mean, even if they could digest them, there is not a lot of energy in them. They'd be better off, from a physiological standpoint, eating livers. And, for the final question of this diversionary meandering into the world of the un-dead, why do Cannibal Corpse still exist?

I mean, let's be realistic, if you had given up on Cannibal Corpse ten years ago and returned to check out "Evisceration Plague" you would be relieved to find that you had missed nothing of any consequence. The band are still rabbiting on about death and killing and torture and other horrible things. The vocalist, if we can use that terms, still screams like a drunk locked in the cells for a night while some other guys thrash around with musical instruments. After over twenty years doing this sort of stuff you would have thought that they might have exhausted their original themes and moved onto something else. Sadly not.

Cannibal Corpse have become the personification of what they portray. Every once in a while, they are wheeled out, like zombies, and shuffle over to the studio for another round of screaming, groaning and mindless thrashing around. Okay, they probably survive on pizza and dope rather than brains, but when they have finished, they are entombed again until the next album needs releasing.

So how DO you kill zombies anyway?

Wow, comparing BMTH to CC, I guess that could work.

This band is everything that is wrong with death metal. The lyrics about death, gore, and mutiliation, although fun, are extremely overdone. Cannibal Corpse has been making the exact same album since 1996. That's depressing, since they do have some class tunes every now and then. The band obviously have talent, but, they have yet to show me any of it in their music. Look at their early works with Chris Barnes as their vocalist, those were some very catchy songs. It seems that they're trying to cash in on that sound. I only recommend this to hipster idiots who only like to listen to BR00TAL music like Bring me the Horizon or garbage like that.
