Gomez has to be one of my favorite British bands of all times. I don't know what it is. They have a different sound than the standard fare of Franz Ferdinand rock, which I don't mind. They are a little more traditional in the pop sense. But most of all, each album they put out is full of great rock songs that make for a captivating listen.

Their latest album, A New Tide is no different in this aspect. Although the album is not quite as immediate as past albums. Some of the songs like "Airstream Driver" and "Natural Selection" do still possess this quality, immediacy. And that is good to keep all of the hardcore fans listening. But have a listen to "Very Strange" and you'll sense something more is at play here. It is that of progression. Gomez is making moves to a slightly different sound without abandoning their old sound. Again you get that feeling on the gentle and beautiful "Other Plans". They still utilize the two singers and they are both apt.

I feel that Gomez reached a peak on How We Operate. That's not to say A New Tide is not good. As you can probably tell from my feverish review that I still am a huge fan. A New Tide takes Gomez down a slightly different path and this path requires more patience. This album could take over as my favorite given some time but as of right now, it will sit quit comfortably in the Gomez catalog as one of the best. Looking for a quick fix? Head to How We Operate or even Split The Difference. Want a more long term rewarding listen, A New Tide is your album. Gomez is a talented band and I am proud to say I've been a fan since day 1.
