There are three bands that pretty much get compared to each other all the time: Mercury Rev, Flaming Lips, and Grandaddy. The latter of these called it quits a few years back but that's not going to stop Jason Lytle, the main songwriter of the band from making more of the same music. That's exactly what you get on Yours Truly, The Commuter, the first solo album from Lytle out on Anti Records.

While Yours Truly doesn't quite hit the Grandaddy highs, it sure has some lofty aspirations. If you've heard Grandaddy then you pretty much know what to expect. Jason's solo album is a little more personal in tracks like "Fürget It", "Here For Good" and "This Song Is The Mute Button" show a lot more of the internal songwriting. But rest assured the good and more upbeat tracks are here even if they are not as prevalent ("Brand New Sun", "It's The Weekend").

I found that Yours Truly required a little more time to catch on to the magic compared to that of Grandaddy records, which tended to be pretty much immediate. Not really a problem because Lytle's voice is something that doesn't tire for me. He's got that gentle voice that could make you do anything. If it doesn't win you over on the first listen, give it two more and you should be sold.

If you haven't heard Grandaddy, maybe head back and check out Sophtware Slump and then check in with this one. But otherwise, there is no reason Grandaddy fans won't latch onto Jason Lytle's solo career.
