Simian Crease is Mike Miles. He records in his bedroom.
Mike Miles grew up in The Dalles, Oregon and currently lives in Portland, Oregon. He's a 43 year old, full-time single father of two teenage girls and ekes out a living as a packaging designer. He started writing and recording music prolifically in middle school, using two cassette tape recorders and whatever he could find to make sounds. His bedroom studio has grown over the years and his music has grown along with it. What he lacks in studio capability, he tries to make up for in creativity and experimentation. He's recorded vocals through a vacuum cleaner hose and played a guitar solo with the plastic eyes of an Elmo doll. Whether using alternate tunings or being out of tune altogether, he is unafraid to take risks with his music. He likes to keep it homegrown, lo-fi and do-it-yourself, uniquely organic. His musical taste is eclectic but some of his biggest influences include The Cars, Devo, Lou Reed, Brian Eno, David Bowie, Pixies, Guided By Voices, Pere Ubu, King Crimson, Neu! and CAN.
‘Tiger' is Simian Crease's 9th proper album. Miles wrote each song about either his Grandma ‘K' or his fiancée (and frequent collaborator), Reyna Lindelof... two very important people to his art. It's an album that confronts and explores his feelings as he looks back on one person and forward with another. He performed all instruments and vocals... save for a couple samples and sound clips, plus an excellent monologue by Reyna. He designed the album art around a photograph taken by his daughter, Hannah Miles.
'Muscle Music' is Simian Crease's 8th proper album. When tackling this project, Miles gave himself two parameters (all sounds would be made with his Gibson SG and his computer) and one concept (each song had to be an experimental guitar piece representitive of some component of the human muscular system). He designed the album art for this one, as well.
'Muttrock' is his 6th proper album. It was born out of one simple question, 'if Simian Crease was an experimental German rock band from the 70's, what would it sound like?' All but one song on the album uses old 4 track recordings he made over 20 years ago as source material. The one song that deviates from that platform is 'Eklipse', which is culled from a song Reyna recorded 3 years ago called 'Eclipse'. Friend and co-worker, Mark Feigner, contributes vocals to this song, as well. Miles designed the album art from an old picture of his dearly departed dog Gretchen.
'U.R.M.M. (Unicorns, Rainbows & Misty Mornings)' is Simian Crease's 5th proper album. It's a fantasy-based concept album exploring the realities of a man's life after 40. It was conceived of and written by Miles and all instruments and vocals, except for a few sound clips, were performed by him. He designed the album art around a collage painting done by none other than Reyna.
