One taste of reggae is all it took for the members of the
One Night Band, a Montreal-based sextet that was initially supposed to be a one-night act, to get hooked. That was three years ago. Since then, the band has been on stage night after night, luring spectators out of their seats and onto the dance floor with its sizzling grooves. The band's ever-growing fanbase is sure to make major label acts envious. Striving to live up to its name, the
One Night Band always performs as if each show were the last.
Since its beginnings (2003), the ensemble has toured extensively, seducing audiences with its infectious blend of reggae, ska, calypso and dub. Having given over two hundred performances throughout Quebec, Canada and the United States, the
One Night Band has been featured in various festivals (
Pop Montreal,
Rimouski Jazz Festival,
Winnipeg Ska et Reggae Festival,
Victoria Ska Fest Showcase,
Chapeau à nos artistes) and events in a number of cities including Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Seattle, Los Angeles, Austin, New York and Washington. The band has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with such artists as
Chris Murray,
King Django,
Vernon Maytone,
The Planet Smashers,
The Toasters and many more.
Gradually, the outfit is making a name for itself in Canada's music scene as the promoter of a culture, which is somewhat overlooked these days.
The
One Night Band is a hardworking group that has built its reputation by adding its own unique flavour to Jamaican ska and reggae classics (
Bob Marley,
Toots and the Maytals,
The Skatalites, Prince Buster,
Ken Boothe, etc.), while also writing and performing its own roots-heavy ska tracks in both French and English. The band's highly accessible music is sure to satisfy anyone seeking to unwind and escape the monotony of the daily grind.
After having released two EPs,
Session A (2004) and
Session B (2005), the band released its first full-length entitled
Way Back Home on Montreal-based label
STOMP Records (
The Planet Smashers,
Bedouin Soundclash,
Subb) last summer.
The record, which was produced by
Mitch Girio (
King Apparatus,
The Kingpins,
General Rudie,
Lo and the Magnetics) and
Lorraine Muller (
The Kingpins,
Lo and the Magnetics), has been applauded by numerous critics (
Exclaim Magazine,
Voir, Bang Bang Magazine,
AllMusic). It has even caught the attention of one of the city's most listened to English radio stations
Mix 96, which has been playing the band's first single "Right On" on their Sunday night primetime show
Rhythms International.
XM radio and
MusiquePlus have also hopped onto the bandwagon, helping the band promote their first effort.
The
One Night Band's future is very promising with a new album in the works, upcoming European and North American tours and possible collaborations with renowned artists.
Now that the trad-ska and reggae scene has been revived, the
One Night Band has all it needs to become one of the most wanted acts wherever the road might take them to.
