 Interview
Interview by tosnob

T.O. Snob: First off, thank you very much for taking the time to speak with us. You have a new EP, Bring On The Tambourines, coming out in September what can fans expect?

Kim Ware: I think friends (I feel funny using the word "fans"!) can expect a collection of quirky pop songs centered around my everyday life. So some of it's funny, some of it's sweet, some of it's a little sad. But all of it's completely honest. They can also expect something a bit more fun and lighthearted than my first record, which was largely a break-up record.

T.O. Snob: What inspires you to write?

KW: Everyday life is definitely my biggest inspiration. I've always enjoyed writing, ever since I was a kid. Be it a short story, a poem, or a song. I guess if I were a visual artist I'd be a realist. I like reflecting on everyday occurrences and feelings through songs. Of course I'm also inspired by my talented friends; I'm lucky to have a lot of them here in Atlanta. Really any sort of art that I think is "good" inspires me.

T.O. Snob: The songs on the EP are more uplifting than last year's Sunset Over Saxapahaw. Do you think this will be indicative of your sound going forward?

KW: Hmm, it's hard to say, but I think so. For "Sunset...", I just really needed to get that stuff out of me. It sounds cheesy, but it was really like a cleansing. But now that it's behind me, there's not really much reason for me to go back to those topics. Sadness has always been pretty inspiring to me though. So chances are, if I encounter something that makes me sad, I'll end up writing a song about it eventually. For the most part though, I'm in a good place now and I think my songwriting is reflecting that. Hopefully it'll stay that way, but who knows!

T.O. Snob:I know you haven't played any dates in Toronto yet, what gives? When can we expect to see you come north of the border?

KW: Wow I would LOVE to make it up to Canada. I've heard it's a little hard to tour past the border though, is that true? Someone hook me up with a show and I'll try to make it happen!

T.O. Snob: A lot of the press I've read about The Good Graces has come from internet resources. What are your thoughts on the role the internet music community can or should play in promoting new artists?

KW: My thoughts are, it can be a tricky landscape to navigate because it changes so often. But the label or band who doesn't embrace it is basically foolish. I might like to pretend I'm old-school about some things, but the truth is I learn about most of the new music I listen to through the Internet. And I don't think I'm the oddball. The Internet presents a lot of exciting opportunities for artists, and it'll serve them well to try to keep up with it, as challenging as that can be sometimes.

T.O. Snob: If you could tour with any artist in the world who would it be?

KW: Gosh there are so many, and this answer would probably change if you asked me tomorrow. But for now I'll say The Mountain Goats. I booked a show for John Darnielle years ago in Wilmington, NC, and ever since then I've just been really taken by his music. He basically can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned. I like the way he continues to sort of fine-tune his sound-he's moved past doing 4-track, bedroom pop stuff-but his songs are still undoubtedly honest and just HIM. Plus I like to think that folks who dig his stuff might appreciate mine also.

T.O. Snob: If someone were to look at your CD collection what would find that surprises them?

KW: That's a tough one. I have a pretty eclectic collection. People would probably be more surprised at what they DIDN'T find ("what?!? you don't have Animal Collective?!?"). I guess the presence of a few mainstream artists like Kelly Clarkson and John Mayer might be surprising to some. And a LOT of Hall & Oates, although that wouldn't be a bit surprising to anyone who knows me.

T.O. Snob: Is there anything else you'd like to add as people await the EP?

KW: Just a thank you for being interested in the music! And everyone remember to check www.bringonthetambourines.com, where you can download a different track from the record for free, every few weeks up until the release!

T.O. Snob: Thanks again for taking the time to speak with us.
